The people of Western Highlands are asking if Governor Tom Olga (left)will ever rebuild their pride - the Kapal Haus - as promised on several occasions. They say it has been nearly two years since the fire brought down the provinces nerve centre in September 2008, but that nothing has been done to rebuild the icon.
Councillor John Watts of the Palga tribe in Hagen RLLG, who claims to speak on behalf of the silent majority, expressed dismay over continued delays at the demolition and reconstruction of the provincial headquarters. The last time Governor Olga promised for Kapal Haus to be reconstructed was early February at the Highlander Hotel in front of a visiting Australian delegation. That promise has not eventuated.
The Governor went to the media and on public gatherings promised the new building. But to date, nothing is happening and Kapal Haus is another jungle in the midst of the city with birds, rats and bandicoots invading the overgrown bush there, Cr Watts said, referring to tall shrubs surrounding the metal remnants.
Cr Watts, who is also a director of Wamp Nga Holdings, challenged the Governor to tell the truth as people were already fed up with empty promises. He asked Mr Olga to remain in the province and start rebuilding the pride of Mt Hagen. He told the people that most of his term was taken up by the court case and that he only had two years left to deliver. But as far as we know, he is still out of the province.
Is he looking for money to build the headquarters? Cr Watts asked. Cr Watts was also critical of several former bureaucrats and government heads being hired or employed by the governor at the expense of the small people. The governor could not be reached for comments.
